Mice in the Walls This Winter? How Oklahoma Homeowners Can Stop Them

The Koalaty Team November 3, 2026
Gap beneath a garage door that can allow mice into a home

When nights in central Oklahoma start dipping toward freezing, house mice look for warmth, water and food. For many homeowners in Edmond, Yukon and Oklahoma City, the first sign is a faint scratching sound inside a wall or ceiling late at night.

Here is why it happens, how mice get in, and what actually works to stop them.

Why mice move indoors in winter

Mice do not hibernate. As temperatures fall and outdoor food gets scarce, they follow warm air and food smells toward buildings. A house offers everything they need: insulation for nesting, stored food, water from pipes and protection from predators.

Mice also breed quickly. A pair that gets into a wall void in November can become a much bigger problem by spring.

How mice get into a house

A mouse can squeeze through a gap about the size of a dime. Common entry points we find on Oklahoma homes include:

  • Gaps where pipes, AC lines and cables enter the exterior wall
  • Worn garage door seals and corners
  • Weep holes and gaps in brick veneer
  • Gaps around dryer vents and attic vents
  • Openings where the roofline meets the siding

Signs you have mice

  • Scratching or scurrying sounds in walls or ceilings, usually at night
  • Small dark droppings in cabinets, drawers or along baseboards
  • Chewed food packaging in the pantry
  • Grease marks along walls where mice travel
  • Shredded paper or insulation

Why traps alone rarely solve it

Snap traps catch individual mice, but they do nothing about the gaps letting new mice in. If you catch a few and the noises come back, you are dealing with an entry problem, not just a mouse problem.

Effective rodent control has three parts:

  • 1. Inspection. Find where mice are entering and where they are active.
  • 2. Exclusion. Seal entry points with materials rodents cannot chew through easily, like copper mesh, metal flashing and sealant.
  • 3. Control and monitoring. Use tamper-resistant stations and traps placed where they will work, and check them on a schedule.

What you can do this week

  • Store pantry food in sealed containers
  • Keep firewood and debris away from the house
  • Trim shrubs back from the siding
  • Replace a worn garage door bottom seal
  • Fix leaky outdoor faucets

Our garage and window sealing service is designed to close the gaps pests use as weather turns.

Frequently asked questions

Will mice leave on their own in spring?

Usually not. Once mice find food, water and nesting material inside, they have little reason to leave, and they keep breeding.

Can I just use poison?

Loose poison can leave mice dying inside walls, causing odor, and it can be a risk to pets. Sealing entry points and using tamper-resistant stations and traps placed by a professional is safer and more effective.

How long does rodent control take?

Many homes see activity drop within a few weeks once entry points are sealed and traps or stations are in place. Monitoring continues until activity stops.
